CHSOC Happenings! Picture This MFA Film Program graduate student Chuckwunonso Dureke, recently won the $30,000 Grand Prize at the 2018 Annapolis Film Festival short film pitch competition. Dureke plans to use the prize to develop her script and work on her master's thesis production. Graduate film student Tracey Davis  also placed among six finalists at the festival. The team recently participated in the inaugural  2018 National HBCU Speech and Debate Championship at Wiley College in late January. The competition was hosted by  Chris Medina, director of Forensics for The Great Debaters at Wiley College. Sharing success Public Relations Award CHSOC alumnus Alex Hill is the recipient of the inaugural Ofield Dukes Millennial Excellence in Public Relations Award. He received the award at the Ofield Dukes Excellence in Public Relations Awards event on Oct. 21 st at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Washington, D.C. Hill works for Miles Ahead Entertainment and is also president/CEO of Humble Hill Public Relations. Two of our current students --  Salina Kamara and Rickey Davis -- received the 2017 Ofield Dukes Scholarships. The awards event was held in honor of Ofield Dukes, a ground breaking Public Relations expert, who started Ofield Dukes & Associates and also taught at Howard University. He died in 2011. The event was sponsored by the National Black Public Relations Society, Washington, D.C. Chapter .

Rashid   recently held a screening of his award-winning film Same Fruit, Different Tree on Sept. 13th in Screening Room West, CB Powell Bldg. The film focuses on different risks that black youths face in society. The film was a finalist in a number of film festivals and won Best Film at the Burien Film Festival’s Short Film Exhibition, and a 2017 Paul Robeson Award in the Media, Journalism and Film Department. A $1 million dollar smile... Two MFA film alums get the picture Filmmaker Faraday Okoro  Source: Phillip David Nondorf/New York Times photo The chance of a lifetime at a $1 million grant to make a feature film is what young filmmakers were offered by AT&T in partnership with Tribeca Institute. We are proud to share the winners are School of C MFA film alums and screenwriting partners,  Farady Okoro and Andrew Long, who pitched their screenplay,   Nigerian Prince. They won the $1 million to develop their film, which will be featured at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2018. The winning film will stream on AT&T platforms, including DirecTV Now, according to Cara Buckley's New York Times story. Congratulations to our alum.
