Fall Highlights
The Fall 2016 semester was filled with activity and excitement. We celebrated the 45th Anniversary Soiree in September; renamed the school to the Cathy Hughes School of Communications (CHSOC) in October; enjoyed alumni at the 2016 Alumni Homecoming Reception; and faculty and students continued an award winning tradition.

Congratulations to Julie Dash, our Time-Warner Visiting Professor, for the 25th anniversary re-release of her acclaimed film Daughters of the Dust and her 2016 Special Award from the New York Film Critics Circle. The Critics Circle presents Special Awards “to individuals and organizations that have made substantial contributions to the art of cinema, including producers, directors, actors, writers, critics, historians, film restorers and service organizations.”
Daughters of the Dust will be at the AFI Silver Theater in Silver Springs, MD, on Feb. 17, 2017. Here's the schedule, if you're traveling before then, and the trailer below:

Shining a Light
Rev. Unnia Pettus will speak when Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and City Council members host the 2016 Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in the John Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W. on December 7, 2016. Pettus will be the Protestant clergy leader to share a brief reflection about the importance of Christmas, and the Tree Lighting Ceremony for DC residents and tourists of the Christian faith. She is an adjunct professor in CHSOC’s Strategic, Legal and Management Communication department, and is the CEO and Founder of Nobody but God Outreach Ministries.

Election and Fact Checking
Professors Frederic Kendrick, Ingrid Sturgis, department chair Yanick Rice Lamb and other CHSOC faculty were on the scene election night with some 70 students covering the 2016 Presidential Election. The students delivered content across platforms and from different perspectives as the election night unfolded and we waited to learn who would become the 45th President of the United States.

Linda Johnson Rice, CEO of Johnson Publishing Co., was the first speaker to launch the Johnson Entrepreneurship
Speaker Series in Founder's Library in November. Johnson Rice is the heir of the family
company that founded Ebony and Jet magazines, and Fashion Fair Cosmetics. She spoke to students and the Howard community about entrepreneurship,
legacy of a family business, and opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs. The Johnson
Entrepreneurship Speaker Series continues in 2017 with the next speaker, Mathew Knowles, founder
and CEO of Music World Entertainment, on Feb 22. 2017.

Professor Tia
Tyree, was among 25 professors selected to participate in the 2016
Fellowship Program with The Television Academy. They spent a week in Los Angeles
learning more about what's happening in the entertainment field to help bring
that knowledge back to their students, classes and research.
