Making Good Connections

SOC’s Vicci Saunders interviewed 
Associate professor Vicci Saunders was interviewed recently on Grand Jury Confidential part of New York Festivals. Saunders is director of WHUR-World, HUR Voice and Sirius XM 141, to name a few of her many roles.  Regarding early influences on her career, she stated in the interview: “Storytelling. I love books, music, theatre, radio, television and film. Those methods of expression were electrifying and amazing to me.” Saunders shares that excitement as a professor who has mentored and supported a number of students and continues to guide them through their experience at Howard. WHBC student media tops the charts
Student radio station WHBC has been named the first place winner of the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) 2015 Signature Station Award.  The students will be recognized with a certificate that will be presented during the Student Media Advisor division meeting on April 17th at the BEA Convention in Las Vegas. Congratulations to all the students and their advisors, professors John Holloway and Judi Moore Latta.

NY broadcast anchor visits with SOC students Students in assistant professor Indira Somani'’s class learn about the industry with a visit from New York broadcast professional Alisha Laventure. Laventure is the weekend morning anchor and host of Diverse Long Island, and general assignment reporter at News 12 Long Island. She was formerly the evening anchor for News 12 The Bronx/Brooklyn.  She has won a New York Associated Press Award for her work on "Pieces of the Puzzle,” a special on children with autism. She joined News 12 Networks as a general assignment reporter at News 12 The Bronx in September 2011.
