#Discover the Unexpected Fellowship Program with NNPA and GM Chevrolet
Eight school School of C students will spend the summer in four cities as part of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) and General Motor’s (GM) Chevrolet new fellowship program for students. #Discover the Unexpected fellowship program provides scholarships and internships in Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, and Washington, D.C. at NNPA member papers.

Fellowship program participants include Brihanna Brown, Brelaun Douglas, Tatyana Hopkins, Victoria Jones, Sidnee King, McKenzie Marshall, Brandi Montgomery and Rushawn Alexander Walker.

The students will hone their skills as journalists and storytellers covering communities in the four markets and publishing across multiple platforms. The Carol Williams Agency in Chicago assisted GM’s Chevrolet Division in launching the program this spring at Howard University. National spokesperson MC Lyte was on hand to kick off and announce the fellowship winners at Howard. The fellowship includes use of a   2016 Chevrolet Malibu, a pool car, at each media outlet as part  driving around communities for their information and data gathering experience. The media outlets include: AtlantaWorld, Chicago Defender, Michigan Chronicle, and The Washington Informer.

SOC's  Jasmine Turner 2016 Hearst Winner
School of C's Jasmine Turner wins third place and a $3,000 award in the 2016 Hearst National Radio Broadcast News Championship. Jasmine was an anchor this year on NewsVision, the student-led news show. Congratulations Jasmine!

Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges 2016 

Two School of Communications students Na’ima Jenkins and Giselle Johnson, joined the ranks of Who’s Who Among College Students for 2016, and were recognized at a special ceremony during the spring in the Blackburn Center.

COSD’s Martine Elie receives award

Dr. Martine Elie, director of the Speech and Hearing Clinic and SOC alumna, received an award for her international efforts in to help students with disabilities including autism. Elie was recognized by the International School of Autism at its April gala in Florida. The institute works to promote higher academic standards for students within the autism spectrum..

Anita Bennett named Daily News senior editor
Alum Anita Bennett is senior editor of the Los Angeles Daily News. Bennett, an Emmy Award-winning journalist with extensive digital experience, will work with her team on enhancing the Daily News’ online presence. She is a former deputy editor of the Hollywood business website TheWrap.com.  Her experience also includes working as
a digital journalist  for KTLA Channel 5  website,  a producer and writer at Los Angele's Fox affiliate KTTV Channel 11 and sister station KCOP Channel 13, and an on-camera news reporter at L.A. Cityview 35.

Alum Eboni Price
SOC alumna Eboni Price is making her mark in California. She works with the VFX team at Bad Robot, and now has several show credits with  Star Wars Episode VII, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, and most recently 10 Cloverfield Lane. She also works on a web series: #Adulting!  Production of the second episode is complete and can be viewed at: #Adulting Episode 102 "Girlfriends"

Photographer Roy Lewis receives award
The Howard University's student chapter of the National Press Photographers Association presented a Community Service Award to Roy Lewis (center), a long-time Washington-area photographer. The award was presented by SOC students in Media, Journalism and Film department in April.

Adopt-A-Team Corporate Program
SOC students shine in Adopt-A-Team corporate program that creates student teams with corporate sponsors during the school year. Two 2016 graduates are placed:  Amylia Johnson has an externship at MSL Group (Publicis) and Briana Carter is an IPG Interact Associate. Four rising seniors have summer internships: Samuel Hargo is at IPG Media Brands, Weaneh Freeman is at VH1 (Viacom), Kandia Moore is at Universal McCann Studios (IPG), and Deneil Mullings is at NBC Universal.

SOC Alum Harvard Nieman Fellow
Congratulations to School of C alumna Lolly Bowean, ('99), who was selected for a Harvard Nieman Fellowship, and will spend the next year at Harvard. Kudos to our alum!
