A. Van Jordan, Henry Rutgers Presidential Professor at Rutgers University
SOC alumnus
and poet A. Van Jordan has been
named the first Henry Rutgers Presidential Professor at Rutgers University. Jordan is known for the breadth of vision and
depth of insight in his writing. He will join the Newark Master of Fine Arts in
Creative Writing program in the English Department at Rutgers
in fall 2014.
Jordan has been a full professor since 2009 at the University of Michigan. He has received a long list of noteworthy awards and honors. Reviewers often remark on his ability to shed light on human relations and approach a broad range of subjects from quantum physics to classic and contemporary film. Jordan has received the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, the PEN/Oakland Josephine Miles Award, a Pushcart Prize, a Times (of London) Literary Supplement Best Book of the Year award, and selection for the anthology Best American Poetry 2013. He also has held a Guggenheim Fellowship and a United States Artists Williams Fellowship. He is on the PEN/Open Book Award long list for his latest collection, The Cineaste (2013), as well as a finalist for the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for the same collection. His previous poetry collections include Rise (2001), M-A-C-N-O-L-I-A (2005), and Quantum Lyrics (2007).
Jordan is from Akron, Ohio. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Wittenberg University and M.A. in Communications from Howard University. He worked several years as a journalist, before his interest in writing poetry started to grow and he would attend readings in the Washington, D.C., area. He received and M.F.A. in creative writing from Warren Wilson College. He also has earned academic credentials in film studies from New York University and screenwriting and production from Vancouver Film School.
