School of C Connections NABEF Media Sales Institute at Howard The 15th annual NABEF Media Sales Institute (MSI) at Howard University started May 31st with the Opening Founder's Banquet at the Blackburn Center on campus. This year's class of 23 recent college graduates will experience an intense two-week series of workshops, lectures and hands-on experience with industry professionals addressing sales and management in the broadcast industry. The MSI program was founded at Howard by former faculty member and broadcast professional Ernie Fears, Jr., Vicci Saunders and Judi Moore Latta. 2015 Paul Robeson Awards Ava Duvernay , Selma director/writer and Bradford Young , Selma cinematographer and School of C alum, were honored at the 2015 Paul Robeson Awards. The awards event was hosted by the School of Communications Media, Journalism and Film department at the Embassy of France in Washington, D.C. The event included a showcase of the best student productions this year. Also honored were three faculty members, who are retiring at the end of the year: Drs. Bishetta Merritt, Paula Matabane and Lawrence Kaggwa . The committee chair Professor Sonja Williams and other faculty and staff helped to make it a memorable event. Congratulations to everyone !

CONNECTICUT STATE CONFERENCE NAACP TO HOST SEVENTH GREAT DEBATE Harvard University vs. Howard University Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman to Serve as Moderator HARTFORD – Some of the brightest young minds from two of the most prestigious universities will face off Tuesday, March 31, 2015 when the State Conference NAACP hosts its Great Debate. The event will be held at 10 a.m. at The First Cathedral 1151 Blue Hills Ave. Bloomfield, CT. Students from Harvard and Howard Universities will debate topics related to education and judicial reform. The moderator for this year’s forum will be Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman, who has spent 30 years in public service, beginning as a Tolland Board of Education member. School of C Happenings! NewsVision On-Air The student-led NewsVision is back on the air after two decades in a partnership with Howard’s PBS station, WHUT-TV. NewsVision is broadcast on Tuesdays and Thursdays on WHUT, which reaches more than 2 million households in the Washington metro area. Faculty members in the Department of Media, Journalism and Film have worked with students in the senior capstone class since last fall to get NewVision on the air. It starts with twice-weekly news reports in March that will eventually become a half-hour newscast in the fall. We look forward to much success for NewsVision. Student Highlight -- Study Abroad Global Connections Erin Winters a junior broadcast journalism major is spending spring 2015 in a study abroad semester at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. In addition to her courses, she is engaged in living and learning the culture, language and people of South Africa. She plans to start a non-profit organization while in the country. Her e-notebook shares how the first days are shaping up: “Cape Town is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. It’s so majestic.
